Criminal History
On September 9, 2022, Shane Jason Woods, a 44-year-old resident of Auburn, Illinois, entered a guilty plea for assaulting, resisting, or impeding law enforcement officers and striking, beating, or wounding a person within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States. On November 8, 2022, while he was released and awaiting sentencing scheduled for January 13, 2023, a Divernon police officer stopped Woods in Sangamon County, Illinois, and detected alcohol on his breath. After Woods made statements about attempting suicide, he fled the traffic stop, drove the wrong way through an exit ramp onto I-55, and drove northbound in the southbound lanes, causing a multi-vehicle crash. His pickup truck crashed into a car driven by 35-year-old Lauren Wegner from Clayton, North Carolina. Wegner died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the coroner’s office of the county.
Woods was arrested for reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence, and fleeing/eluding police.
